Born 1879, Maxton (Drummond Island), MI
Died DEC-29-1916, Notes What we know about this dresser: Mary Christine Sebastian ("Christine") used this dresser for her entire life. It was something her mother (Mary [Sagen] Sebastian) purchased Christmas of 1916 (the same year Christine was born). Mary fell through the ice getting it to her home on Drummond Island. Her cause of death on Dec 29, 1916 was listed as pneumonia. At one point in the care of Christine, it was painted brown, covering the original beautiful hardwood finish. The original (ornamental?) locks on the large drawers were filled in with putty. After Christine's death in 1998, the dresser was in the care (the dry basement) of her granddaughter Dawn Ann [Pauze] Ross. In April 2009, it was given a fresh (black) coat of paint, the mirror backing board was replaced and put in Christine's great-granddaughter's care, Rachel Ann Ross. This work was overseen and documented by her dad, Wayne David Ross. What I find remarkable about this piece of furniture is the drawer bottoms are cut from a single sheet of wood - basically a 1/4" thick board 14" wide. Not multi-orientation plywood veneer. How'd they do that in 1916? Wayne Ross April 2009
